Ropevine

Clematis pauciflora

Most prevalent in sage scrub on dry rocky slopes in the Santa Ana Mountains.  It is also a spring-flowering plant with hairless fruit bodies (achenes). Flowers are in clusters of one to three. Sepals are smooth above, hairy below.  There are 30-50 stamens; 25-50 pistils.
