Polemoniaceae: The flowers are 5-merous (5 united petals in a funnel shape, 5 narrow united sepals, 5 stamens with anthers attached to the corolla tube).  The superior ovary consists of three fused carpels with a three-part stigma (an unusual number for a dicot).  At maturity the seed capsule opens by three valves.  California is a center of diversity for this family.
