Leaves are strap-shaped or lance-shaped, and pinnately lobed.  Bracts are dotted
with glands, and may be hairy with a wide clasping base.  The bract tips are not hooked but are 3-lobed, generally with unequal lobes.  The .9 cm. flower may be purple or white with five 2 mm. lobes.  The stamens and style may or may not be exserted.  There are 3 stigmas. James Dilley Preserve, Laguna Beach, CA. 6-13-09. © Joan Avise.

Navarretia atractyloides

A 2-12 in. spreading spiny annual with glandular hairy stem. Occasional in open areas and along roadsides in chaparral and coastal sage scrub, and grassy meadows in San Joaquin Hills, northern foothills and Santa Ana Mountains. (Roberts)
