Hummingbird Sage

Salvia spathacea

Uncommon in coastal sage scrub from the vicinity of Laguna Beach, Aliso Viejo and Lomas Ridge. It is a perennial that grows from rhizomes.  The flowers produce abundant nectar, making it extremely attractive to hummingbirds who will fiercely defend a patch.
