TROPAEOLUM FAMILY

 

Succulent, prostrate or vinelike herbs, often climbing by coiling petioles; annual or perennial.  Roots sometimes tuberous.  Lvs. alternate, digitately angled or peltate, sometimes lobed.  Fls. solitary, axillary, very irregular, usually showy.  Sepals 5, one produced into a spur.  Petals 5, rarely fewer, clawed, the upper 2 unlike the others.  Stamens 8, free, unequal.  Ovary superior, 3-lobed, 3 celled; cells 1-ovuled.  Single genus with about 50 species of Latin Am.  (Munz, Flora So. Calif. 845).
