Members
of the Mallow Family are herbs or shrubs often with showy flowers.
The flowers have 5 petals.  The
stamens are fused into a center column surrounding the style.
The fruit varies.

Marsh
Mallow (Althea officinalis), a member
of this family, once provided a gluey substance from its roots to make
marshmallows.  This confection is
made now from a mixture of corn syrup, sugar, albumen and gelatin.

The Hibiscus and Hollyhock found in gardens are plants from this family. (Dale 136).
