Plant Characteristics:  Freely branched annual or biennial, 5-12 dm. tall, subglabrous to scattered-hispid; lower lvs. pinnately parted, 1-2 dm. long, with large rounded terminal segm.; upper lvs. toothed; pedicels 1-2 cm. long, ascending; sepals narrow, ca. 9-10 mm. long; petals yellow or yellow with red veins, aging white; siliques nearly cylindric when fresh, constricted between the seeds when dry, 4-6 mm. thick, slender-beaked, transversely divided into 4 to 6, longitudinally grooved 1-seeded segms.

 

Habitat:  Occasional weed in waste places below 800 meters.  April-June.

 

Name:  Greek, raphanos, quick appearing, because of rapid germination of seeds.  (Munz, Flora So. Calif. 297). Raphanistrum, evidently a combination of Gr., raphanos, cabbage and Latin, raphistrum, the wild turnip.  (Jaeger 217).

 

General:  Occasional on the sloping meadow westerly of the Delhi Ditch.  (my comment).       About 4 species of Eurasia. (Munz, Flora So. Calif. 297).
