VERVAIN FAMILY

 

Herbs, shrubs or trees with opposite or whorled leaves.  Flowers perfect, mostly +/- irregular, in terminal or axillary spikes, racemes or panicles.  Calyx persistent, 2-, 4-, or 5-toothed or –lobed.  Corolla gamopetalous, the tube cylindrical, the limb 4-5 lobed.  Stamens 4 and didynamous, or rarely 2 or 5, inserted on corolla-tube.  Ovary 2-4 celled, ovules usually 1 in a cell; style simple; stigmas 1-2.  Fruit dry, forming 2 or 4 bony nutlets or a drupe with 2-4 nutlets.  (Munz, Flora So. Lantana and Verbena of the garden belong to this family, as well as Teak and many other exotic plants of the tropics.  (Dale 197).
