Plant Characteristics:  Prickly shrubs, sometimes climbing and trailing, mostly in temp. parts of N. Hemis.; lvs. alternate, odd pinnate, deciduous or persistent with stipules adnate to petiole; fls. solitary or corymbose or paniculate; petals 5, or double with many petals, broad and mostly rounded at end; stamens many, whorled inserted on a disk at the edge of the hypanthium; pistils many, borne on the inside of the deep hypanthium; fr. a fleshy hip (ripened hypanthium) containing hairy achenes as if they were seeds.

Habitat:  Escape from cultivation.  Blooms mostly in spring and through the summer.

Name:  Rosa, the ancient Latin name.

General:  Rare in the study area, having been found only once and this at a low elevation along the path between 23rd St. and Northstar Beach.   At this location, I have found Rosa, Pyracantha, Plumbago, Hedera and Erythrina, all escapes from cultivation.  Whether they were planted here or thrown from above, I do not know.  All occur at only a few feet above the high tide line.  (my comments).       More than 100 species to which thousands of names have been given, mostly in the temp. parts of the northern hemisphere.  (Bailey 531).
