Epiphytic, sometimes terrestrial fern with creeping or ascending rhizome bearing broad to setiform scales. Stipes usually articulate. Fronds usually simple to pinnate, usually firm in texture, glabrous to hairy or scaly; venation free or usually reticulate. The sori typically round, sometimes elongate along the veins and sporangia sometimes spread over the laminar surface. About 65 genera. (Munz, Flora So. Calif. 23).
