Members
of the Caper Family are heavily scented herbs or shrubs with alternate leaves
composed of 3 or more leaflets on stalks. The
flowers have 4 sepals, 4 petals, 4 or more stamens of equal length and a
superior ovary. The fruit is a
2-valved capsule often on a slender stalk.

are about 30 genera and 650 species in warm temperatures and tropical regions.
The capers for our dinner table come from plants of this family.
