ONION FAMILY

  Orange County Plants in this family have been in Family Liliaceae since the 1993 Jepson Manual was published.  Prior to that time they were in Amaryllidaceae.

Perennial herbs, with bulbs, or corms.  Leaves mostly linear, entire.  Fls. in scapose umbels subtended by membraneous bracts.  Fls. perfect, the perianth of 6 segms.  or lobes, usually petaloid.  Stamens usually 6 inserted in the throat or on the base of the segms; filaments filiform or thickened; anthers introrse.  Ovary superior, 3-loculed; style 1; stigma usually three lobed.  Many valuable horticulturally and economically.
