Plant Characteristics:
Succulent perennial, woody at base, stems slender, branching, rough with
small pustules, sub-decumbent, 1-2 dm. long; lvs. cylindrical, somewhat curved,
1-1.5 cm. long, obtuse, glittering from minute papillae; peduncles solitary, 2-3
cm. long; fls. 2-2.5 cm. in diam.; calyx-segms. equal, linear, obtuse, 3-4 mm.;
petals 1-2 seriate, rose, 8-9 mm.
Habitat:
Established near the beach, Santa Barbara and Ventura Cos.
Summer.
Name:
Dorosan-themum, flowers resembling drosera. (Bailey 363).
Latin, floridus, abounding in
flowers. (Jaeger 103).
General:
Occasional in the study area.
This and several related ssp. bloom
each spring near the bluff tops where they have been planted in front of the
homes located there. This specimen
is from the Castaways Bluffs where it was probably thrown years ago as cuttings
from the gardens around the old Castaways restaurant.
The restaurant burned in 1956 or 1957.
