Calyx is 5-cleft, green to red-purple; corolla is 2-lipped, the lower purple or violet and the upper lighter, occasionally both all white.  The lower lip is folded at the midline forming a narrow pocket in which are enclosed 4 stamens and female structures. As pollinators alight, the lower lip is depressed exposing these organs to
facilitate pollination.  (Clarke et al., 2007, p. 337).
