(Nuttall's Snapdragon)

Antirrhinum nuttallianum, ssp. nuttallianum

A. n. ssp. nuttallianum, the most common and widespread subspecies occurs in dry disturbed places in chaparral and coastal sage scrub, foothills and Santa Ana Mountains. The less common A. n. ssp. subsessile is found usually near the coast, southern foothills and Santa Ana Mountains. Both plants are hairy with A. n. subsessile having coarser hairs with enlarged tips. Both are erect woolly sticky annuals 4- 40 in. high with twining branchlets that are shorter and twine less tightly than the similar A. kelloggii.  Flower stems are 1/4-3/4 in, long.
