Bush Poppy

Dendromecon rigida

A common, widespread up to 10 ft. evergreen perennial shrub found in
chaparral on dry slopes and washes in the Santa Ana Mountains.  It is found more
commonly in newly burned areas because its seeds need exposure to fire for
germination.  It is rarely found in mature Chaparral.  Flowers in this genus
generally have two sepals, four petals, numerous stamens and a superior ovary.
The bud is nodding, becoming erect just prior to flowering.  The two sepals
fall as the petals open, and the petals fall after pollination.  Seeds are dispersed by
wind.
