Weed's Mariposa Lily

Calochortus weedii var. weedii

Both var. intermedius and var. weedii are native to coastal mountain ranges of southern California to Baja California, Mexico.  They are perennials growing from a bulb with a fibrous coat. The 16 in. basal leaf withers by blooming time.  Upper leaves are smaller with margins that are rolled inward. Fruits up to 2 inches long erect and linear.

Occasional on rocky soils on dry ridges and slopes in chaparral and coastal sage scrub; southern foothills, and southern Santa Ana Mountains; also at Caspers Wilderness Park, and along San Juan Canyon (Roberts). It is sometimes more common after fire.  This variant occurs at higher altitudes than var. intermedia, found up to 6000 ft.  Flowering: May- August (JM2).
