There are more than 10 clusters of few-flowered inflorescences.  Flowers have 6 shiny, dark brown- to dark purple or black, equal perianth parts, 3 - 5 mm.;  6 conspicuous anthers on much shorter filaments, and 3 long, exserted filament-like styles covered with white hairs. Juncus phaeocephalus,  var. paniculatus

A 4-20 in. tall perennial, sometimes forming dense stands, uncommon along drainages and other moist area in Santa Ana Canyon, San Joaquin Hills, and foothills of Santa Ana Mountains (Roberts). Fruiting time June-September (JM2).
