Bush Lupine (Guard Lupine) Lupinus excubitus A small, prostrate to erect perennial shrub, from 20 in. to 2 ft. (Clarke) or 5 ft. (JM2) tall; common on dry slopes in chaparral and sagebrush scrub, northern foothills and Santa Ana Mountains (Roberts). Outside Orange County, there are several other variants of L. excubitus which vary by size, shape and longevity, and can be found from the coast to over 8,000 ft. in the mountains. Var. hallii occurs in sage scrub in foothills adjacent to the Santa Ana River lowlands where it forms shrubs with woody bases, growing to 2 ft. tall (Clarke). The fruit is a silky pod up to 2 in. long with 5- 8 mottled yellow-brown seeds with lateral lines (JM2). Flowering April - June. The calyx upper lip is deeply notched, and the same size as the lower which can be entire to 3-toothed (JM2). The banner back is generally hairy, with a bright yellow spot at the base, turning purple at flowering. The keel is generally lobed near the base, with upper margins ciliate from the middle to the tip and the lower margin is hairless.
