Eastwood manzanita

Arctostaphylos glandulosa, ssp. glandulosa
(includes ssp. zacaensis)

A common 2-4 ft. spreading, evergreen shrub on dry rocky ridges and slopes in chaparral in the Santa Ana Mountains.  There is a hemispheric basal burl (not present in Bigberry Manzanita) which sprouts from the root crown after fires.  Grows with Bigberry Manzanita with which it sometimes hybridizes. The leaves, stems and fruits all have short stiff hairs with glands that make them sticky, whereas Bigberry manzanita has hairless leaves and branchlets. Flowering: January - April.

Native to the coastal slopes of western North America from Oregon to Baja California
