A 3 to 12 ft. tall perennial from a long rhizome, common in or near brackish or freshwater marshes, and shores.  Flowering June- September. Uses.

The inflorescence is near the tip, leaving a 5 to 10 mm. spur.  It consists of 25 to 150 spikelets in clusters of one or two.  The perianth is reduced to 2 to 4 reddish brown bristles with hairy margins; 2 stigmas.  Stems are 3-sided to cylindric near the base.
