Red Palm Weevil

Rhynchophorus ferrugineus

Coleoptera: Curculionidae

Red-striped color morph, collected from Canary Island date palms and from a neighboring property in Laguna Beach, Orange County, CA. This color form has apparently not been introduced anywhere outside of its native range of southeast Asia prior to this discovery in Laguna Beach.  The infamous red palm weevil causing so much damage in the Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf region is the typical “all-red” form.  Nick Nisson, Orange County Entomologist.
