The
members of this family are usually herbs with simple, opposite, often succulent
leaves. The flowers are symmetrical
and have both
stamens and pistils. The
4 to 8 sepals are joined. There may
be no petals or many linear ones. The
fruit is a capsule or is berry-like. (Dale
38).
Most of the 1200 species of the Aizoaceae are South African. A few have become almost weeds in America, especially those lumped under the common name of Ice Plant. (Dale 38).
